I think my next door neighbours are environmental vandals.

Don't get me wrong, they are lovely guys and I like them. They are fairly low-key neighbours. They love their home and garden but they seem to hate nature.

Whilst they plant beautiful flowers and their courtyard is immaculate, they leave their very bright outdoor lights on all night every night, they use a leaf blower with alarming regularity and they make sure we prune our tree so that their leaf blower has to deal with as few pesky leaves as possible.

It seems that they want nature as they prescribe it. But nature is messy and intrusive. I always think about saying something to them. Surely they know that the leaf blower is an extraordinarily carbon intensive way to sweep up leaves, that the local birds must be bothered by their lights?

But then I think that it is rude to interfere. Who am I to tell them what to do. Maybe they have made a choice or maybe they just don't know.

I am sure if you asked them they would express concern about the planet, but how do you influence your neighbours without alienating them?
