It’s a new year and as resolutions come and go many of us are embarking on a detox to blow away the cobwebs and simplify our lives.

An excessive lifestyle not only damages our bodies – it can contribute to a high-impact on the environment too. Processed foods contain chemicals that have a higher impact on the environment than organic, fresh and local produce. That, and it takes 960 L of water just to make 1 L of red or white wine. Simplifying your diet is a great place to start, so here’s a few tips to help you out.

When first embarking on a detox, you might feel worse, like you are hungover with flu-like symptoms or headaches, and you might think it isn’t working. But these reactions are in fact your body cleansing itself of impurities, toxins and imbalances. Negative detox symptoms are only transitory – it’s just the body trying to eliminate toxins at a faster rate than they can be properly disposed of.

An easy way to avoid detoxing problems is to make sure you drink plenty of water and consume lots of minerals. It’s important to drink as much water as possible to flush the toxins from your body. One of the most important vitamins to include when detoxing is Vitamin C which is a powerful antioxidant that helps the body break down toxins, allowing them to be flushed out of the body.

I suggest starting the day with a hot water and lemon to kick-start your metabolism, alkalise the body and help with water retention. I also love a green juice like this, but anything from cucumber, mint, spirulina, apple and lemon juice provides needed nutrients that are easily absorbed by the body.

If you’re wondering what to eat, the golden rule is to enjoy a simple whole-foods diet which eliminates processed foods, gluten, wheat, dairy, yeast, sugar and caffeine. Easily digestible foods along with good fats like extra virgin cold pressed olive oil, extra virgin coconut oil and fish oils which contain omega-3 essential fatty acids, will help to eliminate toxins and heavy metals from your body and help you draw out nutrients from food, enabling the healing process.

After the initial detox reaction you should be feeling lighter and have more energy. This is when you may feel like jumping off the wagon, and leaping headlong into your old eating and drinking habits, but once you have detoxed, it’s important to continue making changes to your diet every day. I can vouch that detoxing is a great way to start a healthy and disease-free year!
