There's no denying the importance of information-packed tomes for expanding your knowledge, and how-to books for equipping yourself for action.

But the challenge of achieving sustainability also demands inspiration, creativity and humour.

If you approach your environmental reading like a balanced diet, Cool Hunting Green is the equivalent of an exquisitely presented, tongue-tingling dessert.

It's a compact volume featuring colour photographs and brief descriptive comments about more than 200 "recycled, repurposed and renewable objects that inspire a greener world" from designers around the globe.

These objects are grouped roughly according to themes: Fashion, House, Stuff (gadgets and stationery), Furniture and Outside.

My favourites? For aesthetic appeal, a metallic shoulder bag made with 1,600 aluminium drink can tabs, hand-made in Brazil.

For ingenuity, (odourless) stationery made from elephant dung; this 'waste' product is collected from conservation parks, rinsed with water and then the remaining fibrous materials from the digested grasses, bamboo and fruits are combined with extra fibre from banana trees and pineapples.

Some of the objects might be considered bizarre or even macabre - I certainly found the a bird feeder containing the ashes from a cremated body mixed with birdseed a little confronting - but I like the way these designs made me question some of my assumptions about waste and the value of materials.

This book is all about visual elements. Words are few - there's no introductory essay, for example.

The reader is, however, offered the opportunity to find out more about each object through the inclusion of a web address - either that of a designer's website or an online store.
