He's had a rocky start to life, but the latest and most-talked about addition to Sydney's Taronga Zoo, the newborn Asian elephant nicknamed Mr Shuffles, is slowly gaining his footing.

Yesterday the baby elephant - who was pronounced dead in his mother's womb last week, only to be born two days later in a weak, but very much alive state - got to meet his extended family.

Emerging for the first time from the barn where he was born last Wednesday, the little 'miracle elephant' explored his enclosure, with a few stumbles and tumbles, before meeting his aunties and fellow little one, eight-month-old Luk Chai.

Importantly, Mr Shuffles is part of Australia's first national Conservation Breeding Program for Asian Elephants, whose numbers in the wild may have slumped to as low as 34,000 across their home countries in Asia.

Also importantly, he's darned cute! Scroll through the photos to the right to take a look, and check out the video below.

Taronga is also looking for help choosing a Thai name for the tiny trunked one. On the table are: Pathi Harn (miracle), Tay Wan (boy in heaven), Ming Khwan (good internal strength and attitude), Nam Chok (brings with him good fortune), Mongkon (auspicious), Boon Thung (merit has led to reaching this life) and Chok Dee (very good luck).
