The Bokashi One composting system is designed for the kitchen or laundry. It’s made up of the Bokashi One Bucket and Bokashi One Mix, which work together to eliminate the odours and unpleasantness associated with the putrefaction and decay of food scraps. The Mix is layered with food scraps in the air-tight bucket. Rather than decaying, the waste reduces in volume as moisture is leached out, draining through a grate in the bottom of the bucket. You can dilute this ‘juice’ to feed your garden or pot plants – one teaspoon to 2–3 litres of water. Starter kit $170, www.bokashi.com.au

Closed Loop Organics has just released an indoor composting machine called the CLO’ey Food Waste Composter. It’s designed to turn food waste into nutrient-rich compost within 24 hours through a combination of heat, agitation and airflow. It is powered by electricity and has an agitator that turns the food waste. $698 including delivery from Closed Loop, www.closedloop.com.au, or $767 plus delivery from Masters, www.masters.com.au

The Maze 18L Indoor Compost Bin comes with a 500ml bottle of Maze Microbe Solution Liquid Bokashi, which promotes fermentation of food scraps and the release of a nutrient rich fluid. Bascially, using the Liquid Bokashi helps break down waste faster. The lid ensures any odours are kept in, keeping your kitchen smell-free. $59, Bunnings, www.bunnings.com.au

For a really basic system, try a small lidded bucket such as the 2L or 5L Pail Maxipails. They
can be placed on the kitchen bench and used as mini compost bins, or for collecting vegie peelings and other food wastes, for emptying into outdoor compost bins later. From $2.98, Bunnings, www.bunnings.com.au

The Australian-designed Urban Composter is an anaerobic composting system using the bokashi principles of employing microorganisms to break down food without oxygen. It can handle all types of scraps, even meat. It comes in two sizes – the 15L standard model and the newer 7L City - and there are four different lid colours. Starter kits with the 15L bucket, accelerator and cleaner are $75, www.urbancomposter.com.au

A worm farm is a great option for a balcony with a bit of space. The worms break down food scraps and, in doing so, leave behind nutrient-rich castings and also a concentrated brown liquid that can be used to feed your garden or pot plants. You can buy worms from garden centres and hardware stores. One option is the Tumbleweed 3 Tier Worm Café Worm Farm. $84.90, www.tumbleweed.com.au
