Today is World Environment Day, the day set aside by the UN to appreciate our planet.

The annual celebration was started by the United Nations in 1972 to bring awareness to environmental issues.

Each year has a theme, with this year's being 'Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change', in preparation for the Copenhagen conference in December 2009.

This year, environment organisation Landcare/Coastcare celebrated in style at Circular Quay with celebrities Lane Beachley, Ben Elias, Erin McNaught, Susie Maroney, and the French 'spiderman', Alain Robert there to spread the environmental message.

They were briefly surrounded by a 'flash mob' of globe-like-beach-ball-tossing people, all for a good cause.

Director of the United Nations Information Centre, Chris Woodthorpe also recited the UN World Environment Day message.
