BANG (an acronym for Building A New Generation) Consortium is the brainchild of five mums who saw a gap in the 'green' shopping bag movement.

The material used to create the typical green shopping bag, non-woven polypropylene, is a by-product of oil refining and will not biodegrade.

So together the entrepreneurs came up with a versatile and stylish range of shopping carry-alls, including the 'Winnie' circle bag, that supports fair trade producers in Bangladesh.

These bags are woven from the fibres derived from the stem and outer skin of the jute plant, a rain-fed crop with little need for fertilisers or pesticides.

The supermarket bags are not only biodegradable, but can even be used as garden mulch once you've worn them out.

For everything from groceries, to carrying your sunnies, towel and sunblock to the beach the 'Winnie' circle bag, $30, is a stylish, eco-friendly option.
